Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic admitted to having issues with his weight and conditioning following Tuesday's loss to the Brooklyn Nets. The Mavericks dropped a third straight game following a 102-99 loss to the Nets.
"People are going to talk about it, yes or no," said Doncic, who had 28 points, six rebounds and nine assists in the loss. "I know I've got to do better." Doncic acknowledged he had a long summer but he is hoping to soon get to where he wants to be.
"I had a long summer," said Doncic, who joined the Slovenian national team's training camp days after Dallas was eliminated from the playoffs, leading the program to a fourth-place finish in its first Olympics.
"I had the Olympics, took three weeks off, and I relaxed a little bit. Maybe too much. I've just got to get back on track."
Doncic dealing with an ankle issue
"It's still painful, but I try to play and try to practice," Doncic said of the ankle.
"But it's still painful." Durant, who ruptured Achilles tendon two and a half years ago, played 41 minutes against the Mavericks and scored 24 points. "I know people might be concerned about my minutes and I got injured before and all this extra s---, but we'll figure it out if I get there," Durant said after Brooklyn's 102-99 win Mavericks.
"Right now, I want to play basketball." James Harden also spent 41 minutes on the court against the Mavericks. "One thing about me and KD, we love to play basketball," Harden said. "So it don't matter.
We could play the whole 48. Even if we're exhausted. Coach says something -- nope. We wanna stay in the game. We wanna play." The Nets aren't concerned about the injury Durant sustained more than two years ago. "I think there's enough distance from the injury that we feel more confident," Nets coach Steve Nash said.
"At the same time, we don't love it. We can do all this talk about improving through the year, but there's always the risk of sometimes overburdening him and James as well. We have to be careful. I'm not sure if tomorrow's the day, but there will be times in the season where we have to be really smart and make difficult decisions."
Durant joked he might play 48 minutes in the next game. "S---, I might play 48 tomorrow. Just 'cause," Durant said, cracking a smile. "Give y'all something to talk about."
