Brooklyn Nets star guard James Harden claims he is only interested in winning basketball games this playoffs and not filling up stat sheets. Harden, who was putting up huge numbers during his days with the Houston Rockets, never led his old team to an NBA title.
"I thought winning was all that matters?" Harden said with a laugh on Wednesday, per ESPN. "When I was doing the stats and putting up the numbers, it wasn't good enough. So, at some point we've gotta figure out what we're talking about.
But it's all about winning." The Nets have one of the most talented teams in the entire NBA as their roster also features Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. "My impact doesn't have to show up on the stat sheet for us to win," Harden he said.
"I think my job as a leader is to make sure everybody's playing well. If I'm doing that, I can focus on myself last. That's not a problem at all." Durant underlined that the Nets can't be taking anyone for granted.
"I understand that stuff on paper and how teams look and how accomplished players on our team are," Durant said, "but for us, we respect the game and our opponents too much to come in and say, 'look we're expected to win this.'
We're coming out there and understanding we can be beat if we don't lock in."
Harden feels good about Nets' chances
"Some teams say, 'We just need to do what we do best' -- and that's just not good enough at times," Harden said.
"But for us, that is a great quote, and if we do that, then we definitely have a chance." Elsewhere, the Memphis Grizzlies beat the San Antonio Spurs 100-96 to set up a meeting against the Golden State Warriors for the No.
8 said. "Our plan is to pack for a three-game road trip," Morant said. Grizzlies guard Dillon Brooks delivered a big performance as he scored a game-high 24 points against the Spurs. "We get fired up over those little underdog [labels] or whatever," Brooks said.
"We're just going to be ready to come to play and play our game. If we play our game to the best of our ability and guys just do a little bit extra than what they've been doing, we'll be fine. We're going to bring the intensity and bring the energy, because we've got a goal in mind. I know from the beginning of the year, everybody was bought into that goal, and we're all locked in."
