The Los Angeles Lakers are set to honor the late Kobe Bryant, an icon of the franchise, with a bronze statue in downtown Los Angeles, right outside the Crypto.com Arena. This arena, formerly known as the Staples Center, gained the nickname "The house that Kobe built" during Bryant's stellar career, which included leading the team to three consecutive championships alongside Shaquille O'Neal.

Kobe Bryant's Lakers Legacy

Kobe Bryant's 20-year tenure with the Lakers was marked by extraordinary achievements, including five NBA championships. He is remembered for some of the most iconic moments in NBA history, such as his incredible 81-point game.

In a fitting tribute, the Lakers retired both of Bryant's jerseys, No. 8 and No. 24, on December 18, 2017. The unveiling of Bryant’s statue places him among a prestigious group of Lakers legends, including Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, announcer Chick Hearn, and O'Neal.

Created by renowned sculptor Julie Rotblatt Amrany, the statue is a testament to Bryant's enduring legacy. Thursday is a significant day for Lakers fans for three reasons: the statue unveiling, a game against the defending champions Denver Nuggets, and the culmination of the trade deadline at 3 pm ET.

However, the statue unveiling is expected to overshadow the other events, marking a momentous occasion in the hearts of Lakers fans. The unveiling is scheduled for Thursday, 2.8.2024, symbolically representing Bryant's jersey numbers.

The ceremony is set just before the Lakers-Nuggets game at 10 pm ET. The event will be broadcast live on Spectrum SportsNet and Spectrum SportsNet+ starting at 3 p.m. PT, and later available on Lakers.com. Starting February 9, fans can visit the statue at Chick Hearn Court, which will open for pedestrian traffic at 1 p.m.

ET. Announced on August 24, 2023, a date symbolizing Bryant's jersey numbers and known as 'Kobe Day,' the statue's creation was revealed by his wife, Vanessa Bryant. The Lakers team governor, Jeanie Buss, expressed, "Kobe Bryant was one of the most extraordinary athletes of all time and one of the most iconic individuals in the history of Los Angeles.

There is no better place for Kobe to be honored with a statue than here, at the center of our city, where everyone can celebrate him and be inspired by his incredible achievements”. In a touching tribute, the Lakers will don the Black Mamba edition jerseys, inspired by Bryant and last worn in their 2020 championship run.

These black and gold uniforms, complete with a snakeskin texture, will feature Bryant's numbers, further honoring the legend's legacy.
