In one of the most significant trades preceding the 2022-23 NBA season's deadline, Kyrie Irving was moved to the Dallas Mavericks. Teaming up with Luka Doncic, many anticipated the duo to form an unparalleled backcourt. However, the season did not go as planned, with the Mavericks missing out on the playoffs.

But in a testament to Irving's enduring value, the 31-year-old guard recently penned a three-year, $126 million extension with Dallas. On the "Locked On Mavericks" podcast, Irving shared insights about the Mavericks' choice to retain him on a long-term contract, stating, "I feel like I'm one of the guys that guards Luka the best.

That's probably why I'm on this team." Yet, with his characteristic playful flair, he was swift to clarify that his comments were made in jest, and he cherishes the mischief he stirs. While the previous season was not up to expectations, the atmosphere in the Mavericks' training camp remains buoyant.

Doncic showcased MVP-caliber performances, averaging 32.4 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 8.0 assists across 66 matches. Similarly, Irving, bringing his formidable form from the Nets, chalked up averages of 27.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 6.0 assists in the 20 games he played for the Mavericks.

Irving and Doncic: Title Hope?

The burning question among fans and analysts alike: Can this dynamic pairing of Irving and Doncic translate into an NBA title? Given their offensive prowess, there's little doubt regarding their combined potential.

A potential reason for last season's performance could be the duo's limited time playing together — just nine games. Irving openly discussed the immense pressure that came with the heightened expectations. Fox Sports quoted him saying, "It was so quick last year.

There was so much pressure on us to win now... So we were answering a lot of questions that honestly I don't think we were ready for." As a new season dawns, the Mavericks' roster has been bolstered by the likes of Seth Curry and Grant Williams.

Emerging talents like Dereck Lively II and Olivier-Maxence Prosper are expected to play pivotal roles, especially on the defensive end. As the team gears up, all eyes will be on whether Irving and Doncic can lead the Mavericks to glory.
