Amidst the buzz of the PBA Rookie Draft, Stephen Holt, the Filipino-American sensation, has made waves with his virtual appearance from Portland. Holt was snatched up first overall by Terrafirma, marking a momentous occasion for both the player and the franchise.
But the burning question on everyone's mind: How long will he stay? Yeng Guiao, the seasoned Rain or Shine coach, holds the belief that the Rookie Draft stands as a pivotal method for franchises to build formidable teams.
"Now is the moment for teams aiming for transformation," Guiao remarked. He shared these insights at Sunday’s riveting event held at Market! Market! in Taguig City, which saw an impressive 79 out of a whopping 124 hopefuls hearing their names announced to eager fans and spectators.
Guiao's Draft Concerns Voiced
Yet, Guiao expressed concerns that have clouded drafts in recent years. He recollected instances where top draftees like CJ Perez and Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser were later traded to bigger teams.
"It sometimes feels as though these players were merely incubated by the drafting teams, only to be handed over to more dominant squads," he noted. In this draft, Terrafirma strategically bagged Stephen Holt. At 31, this Filipino-American guard boasts an impressive track record, including stints in the NBA G League and a notable presence on the Atlanta Hawks' Summer League roster.
While Terrafirma remained cryptic about their intentions with their No. 1 pick, Holt's unmatched talent made him an irresistible choice. However, whispers about Holt's tenure with the Dyip are already beginning to circulate, echoing similar questions about Blackwater’s acquisition of the 6-foot-6 dynamo, Christian David.
For Guiao, commitment to nurturing new talent is crucial. He asserts, “If you truly wish to compete, then select and develop your talent earnestly. If not, you're merely serving as an incubator." The draft spanned over three hours, and Guiao expressed satisfaction with Rain or Shine's acquisitions.
Notably, the Elasto Painters secured Luis Villegas and Keith Datu, alongside other significant drafts like Henry Galinato and Sherwin Concepcion. Other remarkable selections include Zavier Lucero, chosen by NorthPort, and Schonny Winston, picked up by Converge.
As the curtain falls on this year’s draft, the future trajectories of these budding stars remain a topic of keen interest for fans and experts alike.
