2004 NBA MVP Kevin Garnett believes Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving are now the best duo in the Western Conference. Prior to the trade deadline, Irving demanded a trade from the Brooklyn Nets. The Mavericks, who were trying to pair Doncic with a star player for quite some time, made an aggressive offer for Irving and the Nets agreed to trade the star guard to Dallas.
“It’s no better two. There’s no better two in the West. You can arguably say Kawhi and PG. But there’s no better two in the West. There’s no better two mother------ that can. Luka can literally sit out a whole quarter and it can be Kai- Two-headed monster? S---.
Let’s do this. We talkin’ about the top ten ones who got ones in the league. Both of them are on the list, the top ten. This [Luka] the younger version, they get you 60/10/8, Man, get the f--- out of here. By himself.
On one leg and they ain’t even near real shape," Garnett said on the SHOWTIME basketball pocast, per TalkBasket.
Garnett believes Doncic, Irving are the best duo in the West
So far, Doncic and Irving have played in two games together.
Last weekend, Doncic and Irving debuted as a pair in the Mavericks' 133-128 overtime loss against the Sacramento Kings. In that game, Irving had 28 points while Doncic scored 27 points. Two nights later, Irving played his first home game when the Mavericks hosted the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Again, Doncic and Irving played well together but again the Mavericks suffered a loss as the Timberwolves won 124-121. Against the Timberwolves, Irving had 36 points while Doncic contributed with 33 points. In their last game before the All-Star break, the Mavericks suffered a 118-109 loss.
For the Mavericks, it was their third consecutive defeat. Irving didn't play against Minnesota due to back issues. It remains to be seen if Irving and Doncic can lead the Mavericks to the Promised Land.
