Luka Doncic jokingly said he needed "a recovery beer" after putting up a historic night. On Tuesday night, Doncic recorded the first-ever 60-point triple-double in NBA history. In a 126-121 overtime win over the New York Knicks, Doncic had 60 points, 21 rebounds and 10 assists.
"I'm tired as hell. I need a recovery beer," Doncic said after the game. With 33 seconds left in the game, the Mavericks were 112-103 down. But they refused to quit and ended up forcing overtime in a stunning way. With a few seconds left on the shot clock, the Mavericks were down by three and Doncic had two free-throw free throws.
Doncic made the first free-throw to cut the deficit to two, before intentionally missing the second free-throw. Doncic rebounded his miss and made a basket to tie the game. The Knicks never recovered from blowing a late nine-point lead as the Mavericks won the overtime with an 11-6 score.
Doncic's historic night propels the Mavs to a win
After the game, Doncic earned praise from Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd, who described the Slovenian as a very special player. "To do something that's never been done before, that's hard to do.
There's been some great players before him. Elgin Baylor and Wilt, he was in that class, and then he separated himself and made his own class," Kidd said. Not only that Doncic earned praise from his own coach, he was also praised by Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau.
"He is monster player. There are some plays I thought he made good plays and was aggressive. But you can't keep fouling a guy and give 22 free throws up," Thibodeau said of Doncic. With their win over the Knicks, the Mavericks improved to 19-16.
With that record, the Mavericks are holding the top spot in the Western Conference. In their next game, the Mavericks are hosting the Houston Rockets.
