Marc Marquez suffered a bad crash during Jerez Grand Prix, the first race of the 2020 MotoGP World Championship. The Spaniard broke his right humerus. This was confirmed by the MotoGP doctors after exams at the mobile clinic.
The Spanish driver was recovering after a mistake in the first laps. He came out on the gravel and was making an extraordinary recovery starting at the bottom of the group. The reigning world champion was third and in full fight for second place, when he was thrown out of his Honda and then crashed to the ground.
He got up at first, but immediately appeared painful in his right arm. The Honda world champion was taken immediately to the medical center, where the fracture of the right humerus was confirmed. It remains to evaluate a possible interest in the radial nerve.
Honda statement: "Marc will be operated on July 21"
"Marc Marquez crashed at turn 3 while he was fighting for the podium, suffering a blow to his right arm. He suffered a fractured humerus. The MotoGP medical staff confirmed that there are no other serious head and chest injuries.
He will remain under observation for 12 hours. On Monday 20 July he will be transferred to the hospital in Barcelona, on Tuesday 21 July he will be operated on by Dr. Xavier Mir. The recovery times are unknown," was Honda statement.
Marquez will be operated on Tuesday 21 July at the Dexeus clinic in Barcelona by the team of Dr. Xavier Mir. The first thing to evaluate is the presence of any damage to the radial nerve of the fractured right arm in the fall: although after the accident Marc managed to move his hand, after a few minutes he lost the mobility of his fingers.
It is likely that this immobility is caused by temporary compression of the nerve and can therefore resolve itself with the passing of the hours. The situation must be assessed before the operation. The second thing to evaluate is the possible insertion of a nail or a plate during the surgery.
The nail would need a small cut to be inserted into the bone to synthesize the fracture. With the nail the recovery times would be less. If, on the other hand, there is a need to use a plate, then the recovery times would be greater, since the plate needs a larger cut.
Marc will miss the next Andalusian GP (which will always take place in Jerez from 24 to 26 July). It is very optimistic to think of seeing Marquez again in Brno in three weeks (Czech Republic GP scheduled from 7 to 9 August).
Of course you will have a clearer picture after the operation. Valentino Rossi commented on the Spaniard's crash at the end of the race: "Marquez was the driver with the best pace, but he crashed in a bad place. He got hurt, you have to see the extent of the injury and understand how much it will take to It's difficult for the championship because the World Cup is short and there are few races.
Alex Marquez met his brother at the end of the race: "In the race I noticed that Marc's crash had been bad. Motorcycling is like that, we can all get hurt. The show he gave before the crash was a world champion. I talked to him, he doesn't want to ruin his season, Marc always wants to win. It will be tough with this injury, but my brother is a beast, he will come back strong."
