On Sunday, April 2nd, the Termas de Rio Hondo circuit in Argentina played host to the second race of the 2023 MotoGP season. In difficult conditions, 24-year-old Italian racer Marco Bezzacchi claimed his first victory in the premier motorcycle racing class and took over the championship lead.

A Triumphant Performance

Starting from second on the grid, Bezzacchi quickly made his way to the front of the pack, never looking back. Despite the challenging weather conditions, the VR46 junior team rider felt confident and in control throughout the race, delivering a spectacular performance.

In a post-race interview, Bezzacchi expressed his surprise at his own speed, stating, "I have no words because today, honestly, I woke up with a strange sensation. I knew I could go fast, but I didn't expect to go so fast." He went on to describe his experience on the wet track, saying, "I was really scared of the wet because normally I'm not very good with the MotoGP (bike) on the wet but today it was fantastic.

I had an incredible feeling since the first meter of the warm-up and I just enjoyed a lot with my bike."

A Ducati Dominance

Completing the podium for Ducati were Frenchman Johann Zarco and Spanish racer Alex Marquez, who finished more than four seconds behind Bezzacchi.

This result confirms that the Italian motorcycle builders from Bologna are a force to be reckoned with this season. Meanwhile, World Champion Francesco Bagnaia and Saturday's sprint winner, KTM rider Brad Binder, experienced a difficult day on the track, as both riders fell in the rain and missed out on valuable championship points.

A Disappointing Day for Some

In addition to Bagnaia and Binder's misfortune, reigning World Champion Joan Mir was forced to sit out the race due to injury. The Honda rider suffered a head and cervical trauma in a crash during the sprint race, as announced by the team just a few hours before the start of the Grand Prix.

The MotoGP Results

The results of the Argentine Grand Prix are as follows:

  • Marco Bezzacchi (ITA) Ducati 44:28.518 mins
  • Johann Zarco (FRA) Ducati +4.085s
  • Alex Marquez (ESP) Ducati +4.681.
With 50 points, Bezzacchi currently leads the World Championship ranking, followed by Francesco Bagnaia with 41 points, and Johann Zarco with 35 points. The next race will take place on April 16th in Austin, Texas.
