As we approach the end of the year, the Cleveland Guardians are still basking in the glory of their exceptional 2023 season. The latest feather in their cap comes in the form of a prestigious award bestowed upon their star first baseman, who undoubtedly had a career-defining year in Major League Baseball (MLB).

On a recent Thursday, the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum unveiled the recipient of the highly esteemed 2023 James "Tip" O'Neill Award – none other than Josh Naylor, the powerhouse first baseman for the Cleveland Guardians.

Prestigious Canadian Baseball Award

According to an official press release from the Canadian Hall of Fame, authored by Scott Crawford, this accolade is reserved for a Canadian player who demonstrates a remarkable blend of individual excellence and significant contributions to their team, all while upholding the highest principles of the sport of baseball.

Naylor's performance on the diamond in the 2023 season was nothing short of extraordinary. He achieved a career-best batting average of .308 and notched an impressive 97 runs batted in (RBI) during just 121 games played. These outstanding numbers place him in the elite company of only three other players in the storied history of the Cleveland franchise.

Moreover, Naylor achieved personal bests with 139 hits, 31 doubles, and an impressive .843 OPS, all while launching 17 home runs. Beyond his on-field excellence, the 26-year-old Naylor has solidified his presence as a true community ambassador.

Crawford's report highlights Naylor's involvement in charitable events, including his initiation of the "Cooking with Naylor" program at the Ronald McDonald House. This program delivers baseball-themed boxed lunches to children and parents residing in the facilities and Ronald McDonald Family Rooms within Cleveland-area hospitals.

During the offseason, Naylor has consistently supported the Shoe Box Project, an initiative aimed at creating thoughtful gift-filled shoeboxes for women in emergency shelters and temporary housing throughout the Greater Toronto Area.

In response to receiving this prestigious award, Naylor expressed deep gratitude. He acknowledged the illustrious company of past winners, which includes luminaries like Hall-of-Famer Larry Walker, Éric Gagné, and Joey Votto.

Naylor humbly stated, "Being on the same list as all those previous winners is an honor and what makes receiving this award even more special. The fact I was even nominated was an honor, knowing who this award represents." Josh Naylor's remarkable performance on and off the field undoubtedly makes him a deserving recipient of the 2023 James "Tip" O'Neill Award.

His commitment to excellence, both in the game of baseball and in serving his community, sets a shining example for athletes everywhere.
