The Houston Astros have faced their fair share of criticisms in recent times, particularly about their pipeline of prospects. Analysts frequently rate their prospect system as one of the weakest among Major League Baseball (MLB) teams.

This perceived shortcoming largely stems from the Astros' pattern of promoting young talents to the major league and parting ways with others in exchange for seasoned players, aiming for a robust postseason performance. Yet, it's crucial to note that those who transition from the Astros' minor league to the main roster typically evolve into consequential game-changers.

And now, all eyes are on Brice Matthews, who is poised to be the franchise's upcoming superstar.

Brice Matthews: Multi-Sport Prodigy

Brice Matthews, who clinched the 28th overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft by the Astros, boasts an eclectic athletic background.

He once ruled the field as a standout high school quarterback but later pivoted to baseball during his college tenure at the University of Nebraska. It's here he etched his name in the record books, becoming the first to smash 20 home runs and clock 20 base steals in a single season.

Currently holding the No. 4 spot among Astros' prospects, Matthews showcased his prowess predominantly at the Single-A level this year, posting a commendable slash line of .217/.373/.367. He also managed to hit four home runs, 11 RBI, and stole 16 bases.

Speaking with's Brian McTaggart, Matthews shed light on his shift to professional baseball, admitting, "The fastball had a lot more movement than in college. But overall, I feel I held my own." As Jose Altuve, the Astros' celebrated second baseman, advances in age, there's palpable anticipation that Matthews could be his successor.

Although Jeremy Pena is viewed as the Astros' probable future shortstop, Matthews might have to acquaint himself with the second base during his time in the minors. Matthews exudes excitement about his baseball journey, affirming, "It’s been an incredible experience.

I believe everything transpires for a reason, and I’m ready to embrace whatever life has in store." With predictions hinting at a potential move to Double-A next year, Brice Matthews remains a prime candidate for future call-ups. For fans and analysts alike, he's the one to watch, as he might just be the Astros' next big sensation in MLB.
