Basketball icon and Los Angeles Lakers legend, Magic Johnson, may have bid adieu to the NBA almost three decades ago, but he has never distanced himself from the sports arena. At 64, Johnson's portfolio boasts impressive ownership stakes in the Washington Commanders of the NFL, Los Angeles FC of the MLS, and several other notable entities.
Diversifying his professional sports engagements, the 5-time NBA champion has also been closely associated with a major baseball franchise for over a decade, recently celebrating a milestone. Nearly a year earlier, Johnson made headlines when he openly declared his reluctance to invest in the multi-billion-dollar franchise’s player acquisitions.
But that did not deter his passion and loyalty to the team.
Magic Johnson Celebrates Dodgers' NL West Win
Earlier today, Johnson expressed his elation on his X (previously known as Twitter) profile, lauding the Los Angeles Dodgers for their NL West title triumph.
In response to the Dodgers’ celebratory tweet, which read, "These NL West Champs are so special,” Johnson penned a heartfelt message. “Congratulations to my @Dodgers for once again clinching the NL West! This marks the 10th time in our 11-year ownership.
Immense gratitude to each @Dodgers player, with special nods to Clayton Kershaw, Mookie Betts, and Freddie Freeman!" The LA Dodgers have always held a significant spot in Johnson’s heart, owing largely to his ownership stake.
Back in 2012, the MLB universe had reservations about then-owner Frank McCourt's stewardship of the Dodgers. Amidst growing controversies, the franchise was put on the market. Spotting an opportunity, Johnson and his Guggenheim Baseball Management consortium made a historic move, securing the Dodgers for an unprecedented $2.5 billion.
This recent acknowledgment from Johnson carries even more weight, considering his candid revelation about his dynamics with the Dodgers last year. In a candid chat with Jimmy Kimmel in October 2022, the conversation meandered through various subjects, notably highlighting Johnson's famed vacations.
Through thick and thin, it’s evident that Johnson's commitment to sports, especially the Dodgers, remains unwavering.
