Who was the best at training in Sochi?

Valtteri Bottas drove the fastest lap in the second free practice for the Grand Prix of Russia despite a big mistake in the last turn, and Lewis Hamilton set the second fastest time in the second practice after 19th place in the first.

Bottas drove 1: 33.519, 1.4 s faster than in the first practice, on soft tires, on which all drivers drove their fastest laps, and Hamilton was 0.267 seconds late after blocking the wheels in his second fast lap and nearly hitting the protective fence as he tried to get back on track.

Hamilton was faster after the first attempts was a tenth faster than Bottas, but in the second lap, after a seven-tenth advantage after the first two sectors, he made a mistake on braking for the 13th turn, blocked the wheels, extended straight and barely escaped the guardrail.

Bottas had a seven-tenths advantage after the first two sectors in his second lap, but lost about half a second in the final sector and flew very wide in the last turn, which improved Hamilton's time by less than three tenths.

Ricciardo was the closest escort to Mercedes in third place for Renault and a second behind Bottas, and the Australian was 0.146 s ahead of fourth-placed Sainz at McLaren who damaged the car in first practice and drove just eight laps.

Norris, unlike Sainz, used a new nose and front wing in the second practice for McLaren who wanted to compare the two specifications, and the British driver finished fifth, 0.124 s behind a teammate. Racing Point took sixth place with Perez, who does not have a new package of improvements this weekend either, while Stroll was only the 17th fastest, seven tenths behind Perez.

Verstappen was unlucky

Verstappen had a bad second practice for Red Bull as he twisted after losing control of the back end in the 14th turn and finished seventh fastest with 1.5 seconds behind while Albon was 12th with two tenths of a second behind Verstappen.

Although Sochi is a track that shouldn’t have suited Ferrari given the importance of engine power, Leclerc and Vettel finished in the top 10 - Leclerc was eighth and Vettel tenth with a tenth slower time. Ocon separated the Ferrari drivers in ninth place for Renault, but with a big six-tenths lag behind team-mate Ricciard after a few minor mistakes in their qualifying simulations.

Gasly and Kvyat were 11th and 13th fastest for AlphaTauri, and Raikkonen was 14th fastest for Alfa Romeo, half a second ahead of teammate Giovinazzi in 19th place. Latifi was 0.012 s faster than Russell in 15th and 16th place for Williams, and Haas was the slowest in second practice in 18th and 20th place. The third free practice runs on Saturday at 11:00 and the qualifiers start at 14:00.
