Mick Schumacher will be Ferrari's reserve driver in 11 races in 2022

Mick Schumacher will be Ferrari’s official reserve driver in the middle of next year’s races, and in addition he will normally perform his driving duties in Haas team The young German, who made his Formula One debut this year, will share the role with Antonio Giovinazzi.

The former Alfa Romeo driver will not be able to attend several races in the Formula 1 calendar for 2022 due to his obligations in Formula E. "Antonio Giovinazzi will not be driving in Formula 1 next year, but he will remain our reserve driver for 2022," explained Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto.

"He will be our reserve driver for 12 races, which is what will be compatible with his Formula E calendar which he decided to move to and we are very happy about because it will somehow keep him trained." Giovinazzi will also be available for two Ferrari powertrain customers, Haas and Alfa Romeo.

When he is not on the track, Schumacher will be on standby and replace any of Ferrari’s permanent drivers if they are unable to race. “For the remaining races, 11, races where he won’t be, Mick Schumacher will be a reserve Ferrari driver, which again I think is great because it will be his second season next year."

"He is a Ferrari driver who comes from the driving academy. I am very happy to be part of the team as a backup driver whenever needed, "he added. In the case that Ferrari is forced to seek Schumacher’s services over a racing weekend, Haas would likely rely on reserve driver Pietro Fittipaldi, who drove two races for the US team last year in exchange for Romain Grosjean.

Binotto on Schumacher

Binotto assures that Schumacher will benefit from Ferrari's contribution next year: "In 2021, he was followed by Ferrari engineers dedicated to the Ferrari Driving Academy program to support its development, and this will continue next year," he explains.

“Our simulator will be available to him here in Maranello, but we have the whole program because, since we are still part of the academy, it is part of our goals to continuously try to develop them as drivers because again, the ultimate goals one day: will it prove that they are capable of being Ferrari drivers.

" Binotto was impressed with Schumacher’s performance in uncompetitive Haas, with whom he failed to won some points, but gave him confidence in the rookie’s ability. "If you're doing well, there's no doubt you may have a chance.

He already has one season in F1, which is important because I think Mick did well this season: he has improved, not only in terms of consistency but also in terms of speed. " "If I look at the last races, he was much closer to the cars in front, while Haas didn't develop the car at all, so the fact that he was closer proved that he made good progress in speed."

"He will drive cars for 2022 next year. These cars will be really different from the current one in terms of driving style. I think it will be important to have a backup driver who knows those cars, "said Binotto.
