Damon Hill doubts Verstappen's mental strength

1996 world champion Damon Hill believes Red Bull driver Max Verstappen could succumb to the pressure of the title challenge in the 2021 season, but wonders with what Hamilton must attack the Dutchman. There are only five races left until the end of the current season.

Verstappen and Hamilton are fighting a great fight to win the title this year. The Dutch driver managed to beat his main rival in the last race, which was racing for the US Grand Prix. The track in Austin was to suit Mercedes and the seven-time world champion.

However, the opposite happened: Red Bull invited its driver to come in early to change the tires after Hamilton managed to overtake Verstappen at the start. In the end, it turned out to be the right move. The driver of the Austrian team now has a 12-point advantage over the seven-time champion, but he will have to be careful in the last races because carelessness could cost him the title.

However, Damon Hill believes Verstappen will now be under tremendous pressure, given his position and the importance of one thing: being a Formula One world champion. "I think it will be difficult for Max to stay calm now because he only has a small ray of light at the end of the tunnel.

That little light that says, ‘You’re a world champion,’ Hill explains. "I mean, my God, calm down now. You know that everything can turn the other way. In some way, it's yours to lose. You almost got it, but you can lose it, and that’s tension as much as relief."

"Sometimes it's harder to keep this precious thing and protect it than to chase after something. " However, Hill also quickly pointed out that Hamilton could struggle to match the pace that Max Verstappen has.

“What does Lewis really have to attack? He seems to be losing the things he needs to attack Max. Therefore, I think Max is in some ways pleased with the fact that the car can do the job for him, and he can." "But it's much harder as you get closer to your final destination, "Damon Hill concluded.

From what we have seen so far, Verstappen has coped well with the pressure and has shown that he is a very strong person mentally. However, these are now the last moments in which he must show calmness and focus, and right now we will see if he is really that mentally strong.
