Mercedes is assessing options for Hamilton to be penalized in Turkey

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff does not rule out the possibility of changing the power unit of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton and heading for the back of the grid at the Turkish GP. The Austrian claims that he will make this decision spontaneously because the consequences can be extremely important in the final outcome for the title in the 2021 season.

Wolff assures that the most important thing is that they do not have to suffer problems with the drive unit until the end of the championship. A reliability error in the race would result in Hamilton giving up, and that is something the Silver Arrows boss wants to avoid at all costs.

Therefore, the installation of an additional drive unit and punishment in Turkey is an option for Mercedes. "Changing the engine in Turkey and punishing is a possibility. We haven’t decided when and how yet, but the most important thing is not to give up because of reliability issues."

"We are analyzing the parameters of the power unit and we want to make sure that we will not bother with reliability until the end of the year, "Wolff said in an interview with Sky Sport.

Spontaneous decision

The head of the German team explains that he will make the decision spontaneously because although Turkey facilitates overtaking, he will not change the engine if they do not consider it strictly necessary.

“We are currently going race by race and watching how the performance and endurance of the drive unit develops. If we change the drive unit, it will be spontaneous, because we would have the same shortcoming that Red Bull had in Sochi, "he added.

On the other hand, Wolff recalls that Hamilton had a great performance at Istanbul Park, especially in 2020, when he won the race and tied the number of titles with Michael Schumacher. However, it was not his only brilliant Sunday at the Turkish Grand Prix, as he also won in 2010, when he was still a McLaren driver.

A reliability error in the race would result in Hamilton giving up, and that is something the Silver Arrows boss wants to avoid at all costs. Therefore, the installation of an additional drive unit and punishment in Turkey is an option for Mercedes.

"Lewis had great races in Turkey, but we have to do every race in our own step. It's complicated, the cars are very close and I'm very curious to see how the championship will develop, "said Toto Wolff. It is obvious that Mercedes will not have an easy task and that a difficult championship awaits them until the very end.

The team will have to manage as best they can if they want to emerge as the winners in the duel with Red Bull
