McLaren drivers frustrated by small lags behind third place

Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris are frustrated that they were so close to third place in the qualifiers for the Italian Grand Prix even though they achieved collectively the best qualifying result of the season on the superfast track in Monza.

Norris and Ricciardo qualified for fourth and fifth place for McLaren, but due to Bottas ’penalty for changing drive unit elements, they will start third and fourth in Sunday’s race. In the sprint qualifiers, Bottas will keep his first starting place, so McLaren's drivers will start fourth and fifth, and although they are satisfied with the result, they are also frustrated because they were less than three hundredths behind third-placed Verstappen.

For Ricciardo, this is McLaren’s best dry-qualification result after being fourth-fastest in qualifying in wet conditions in Belgium. “I have a certain internal frustration that I was so close to the top three,” Ricciardo told Autosport.

"But I know I have two chances, in the sprint and in the race, to make up for time and position." “In the second chicane, I left some time in both Q3 attempts. In the last sector, I was always a bit slower, so I did the best I could.

” "But in the second chicane I didn't manage to get out of the corner as I wanted, so I lost some time there. “Being so close to the first three hurts. But I have two chances to get rid of that rage at the start of the race and I hope it goes well.

Norris on the race

Norris was of a similar mindset as his team-mate whom he leads 9: 5 in qualifying matches after Monza. “I hate those words‘ very close ’because after them you always feel like you haven’t done a good enough job,” Norris said.

"I'm happy. We are in a much better position than last weekend [in the Netherlands] and I am looking forward to the race. So far this is a nice weekend, we are in a good position. " “Missing third place [in 0.023 s] suc*s.

I wish I was a little faster than I think we could with this car. But we will have to try in sprint. ” Norris lost third place in the drivers ’standings in the last race to Bottas leading by nine points ahead of Norris after the Finn finished third while the Briton was only tenth after starting from 13th place. Sure they both expected more, but this is a good result too, and says McLaren can do a lot this season
