Verstappen was the fastest in the 2nd practice

Max Verstappen remained the fastest in the second free practice for the Styrian GP despite the threat of rain, and Daniel Ricciardo was the second-fastest time for McLaren. The training started on a dry track, but soon the first drops of rain began, which threatened the first training, but the conditions did not change.

Sainz twisted on the way out of the fourth corner on the hard tires touching the green area after the exit curb on the hard tires, ten minutes after the start of training, and after fifteen minutes the drivers hurried to the track on the soft tires.

Bottas first set the second-fastest time on the soft, six hundredths behind Verstappen on the hard, but then several drivers ruined the best time, so 22 minutes after the start of training, the leader was Ocon ahead of Hamilton, Alonso, Vettel, Norris, and Stroll who were within 0.289 seconds.

Hamilton took the top with a half-second faster time that was soon annulled due to too wide a pass of the last turn, and Verstappen set the fastest time on the soft 1: 05.412 ahead of Ricciardo in McLaren who was 0.336 seconds slower.

Perez was seven-tenths of a second behind in the soft, half an hour after the start of training, and both drivers Alpine, McLaren, and Aston Martin were faster than him. Drivers for the last 20 minutes focused on simulations of the sections they would drive in the race, with more fuel, and Mercedes shared strategies among its drivers - Hamilton got soft and Bottas hard tires.

But after the mechanics put a new set of hard tires on the Bottas, the Finn added too much gas to warm up the rear tires and twisted in the pits, almost hitting the rear end into the wall separating the pits from the track the referees promised to investigate after training.

Verstappen remained the fastest, 0.336 seconds ahead of Ricciardo, and Ocon at Alpine was another 0.042 seconds slower in third place.

Hamilton finished fourth

Hamilton finished fourth fastest for Mercedes even though he had the fastest time (1: 05.335), almost half a second faster than the time that stands for him as the fastest, which was annulled for him due to too wide passing of the tenth corner.

Alonso completed a good day for Alpine with a fifth-fastest time, 0.037 seconds behind Ocon, while Vettel was a faster Aston Martin driver in sixth place, a tenth behind Alonso. Norris was seventh fastest in second McLaren, 0.246 seconds behind Ricciardo, and Stroll was eighth for Aston Martin, six hundredths slower than Vettel.

Perez had two disappointing laps on soft tires and finished only ninth in the second Red Bull ahead of Giovinazzi in Alfa Romeo. Ferrari had another disappointing training session that finished in 11th and 13th place and was separated by another driver who doesn’t have much reason to be pleased - Bottas in a Mercedes.

Tsunoda finished 15th fastest for AlphaTauri after it was announced before training that Gasly would not be performing due to a drive unit problem, and Russell managed to be faster than both Haas for Williams. The third free practice starts on Saturday at 12:00, and the qualifiers are scheduled at 15:00.
