Pierre Gasly says that in a tense fight with Charles Leclerc in the final of the Grand Prix of Azerbaijan he desperately wanted the podium despite the problem with the loss of power of the propulsion unit and that he was ready to do anything to keep third place.
Gasly had a great weekend in Azerbaijan with the best time in third free practice and the fourth-fastest time in qualifying, and although he lost his place to Vettel due to problems with Honda’s powertrain he managed to keep third place ahead of Leclerc.
A good race for AlphaTauri was completed by Tsunoda who also placed in Q3 and finished in the point-scoring round in seventh place, which is the first time this season that both AlphaTauri drivers have finished in the top ten.
Gasly on his race
“What an amazing weekend, fastest in third practice, fourth in qualifying, and podium in the race, I am so happy for the team, this is a great result,” said Gasly who has won points in all races this season except Bahrain.
“The last two rounds have been so intense with Charles and I really had to fight hard for that podium." "We drove the whole race at full power and we managed to keep up with the drivers in front, but halfway through the race we had a problem with the engine and started losing power on the straight, so I knew it would be difficult until the end."
"But we managed to keep the fourth place. At the restart I thought Charles would overtake me in the straight because we were losing performance, but I saw an opportunity for the podium and I tried everything, I desperately wanted that podium.
” “It was a tough but fair race, just the way we like it. The car was amazing all weekend and this is a fantastic result for the whole team. I am delighted that they were awarded a podium. ” "On the eve of France, we have to analyze what was good this weekend and see how we can use it in the next race.
It’s my home race and I really want to be good at it, but now is the time to celebrate. I've already drank Red Bull, but I think I'll drink something else! ” Gasly looks very motivated and confident for now, we will see how long he will be able to keep this pace
