Mercedes technical director James Allison doesn't like the current F1 rules, especially how it affects the cars. He thinks the reigning champion, Max Verstappen, might feel the same way. The new 2022 regulations aimed to improve racing but made the cars heavier and less enjoyable to drive, according to Allison. Allison emphasized that things are different than they used to be. Many of the drivers do not feel great driving their cars. F1 drivers used to enjoy going to the tracks. It seems that there is less and less of it.

“I'm sure I bang on about this because it's been a bug-bear, of mine, but I personally don't think it's a great thing,” Allison said, as reported by crash.net

“I don't think it's good having the cars operating, when they leave the garage, with that much space to the ground.

You get the person who's winning the championship by one of the biggest margins ever, and has every reason to love his car to bits, and I doubt he'll tell you it's a lovely thing. It is not like it was a couple of years ago.”

James Allinson explains his views

According to Allison, the height of F1 cars from the ground in 2021 ranged from 120mm to 140mm. In 2023, it's just 60mm. He explained that the media used to talk a lot about high-rake and low-rake cars, with high-rake around 140mm and low-rake around 120mm. During that period, there were many reactions from the fans as well as the drivers.

But now, all cars start at 60mm from the ground. Allison pointed out the difficulty of making the cars perform well when the rules mainly prioritize keeping them close to the ground. It seems that every year it will be more and more challenging to create a car that can do great things. Allison is nevertheless optimistic about the team's future and believes that Mercedes can win the championship again. For a long time they did not succeed in this.
