Although the race in Singapore was an indication that Mercedes can do a lot, it seems that this team already has a focus on 2024 and a new car that should be significantly better than its predecessor. Toto Wolff emphasized that his team is going in the right direction and that they have positive signals regarding the new car.
What is most important is that there is optimism in Mercedes after "many dark" days behind them. “We will throw this one in the bin when it's really fast and then embark on a new journey,” said Wolff, as quoted by motorsport.com!
“I think we have encouraging signs from the tunnel of a balanced car that's going to be more together, and we have answers to our questions. So, we are really looking at the results with an encouraging perspective”.
W14 car
W14 did not prove to be the best solution. Wolff and his team have trouble predicting what kind of weekend awaits them. It is obvious that they do not need a car that is not constant. “This is still for us a little bit of a surprise box.
Every learning that we have this year is going to be valuable next year – but obviously nobody is working on the current cars anymore”.
Wolff is disappointed considering that such a car does not guarantee success.
His drivers have trouble gathering confidence in conditions when they are not sure what will happen. Wolff's team needs to build more trust in their car and drivers. “I think that the car is still so sensitive and difficult to set up that we need more sessions to get on top of it.
Because you [the drivers] don't know what the car is going to do when you turn in, it's a matter of gaining confidence over those sessions. And the longer we run, the better we get, the more we can fine tune the tools and that helps”.
