Four races remained until the end of the season, and one of the biggest unknowns is the outcome of the fight for third place in the constructors' standings. McLaren, Renault and Racing Point are competing for that prestigious result, and the head of the latter team believes that the decision will fall only in the last race.
Renault is currently leading in that fight with 135 points, but the advantage is minimal because McLaren and Racing Point collected 134 points each.
Third place fighting
Otmar Szafnauer, head of the Racing Point team, says of that fight: " I think the fight for that third place is one of the best things this season.
Generally throughout this year it has been very uncertain in the central part of the ranking. We were equal to McLaren and Renault, as the ranking suggests, but some other teams knew how to be in that fight on certain tracks, which is great for the sport and which brought us unpredictable and exciting races.
” "I expect the fight to go on until the end in Abu Dhabi. We are only one point apart and anything is possible. We will get stuck and give everything we have, and we will treat this final as a championship of four races in which our goal is to break to the top.
” "We believe that Turkey, Bahrain and Abu Dhabi will suit the RP20 and we expect to be strong in all four remaining races. It is up to us to make the most of the potential of our car and secure many points in all the races that are still ahead of us.
” This was an unusual season marked by a coronavirus pandemic, and the F1 community had to adapt to the new circumstances. The head of McLaren's team points out that COVID can also influence the outcome of that fight for third place.
“Luck or misfortune with the coronavirus can decide that battle of the three teams for third place in the constructors’ standings. That is why we ask our people for extreme discipline and they do a great job.
However, you also need luck because it is easy to get infected. You can't control a lot of things in hotels or airports, ”says Andreas Seidl. The fight for the fourth place in the driver's standings is also interesting.
Renault's Daniel Ricciardo is currently in the best position with 95 points. Charles Leclerc has ten less, and Sergio Perez is at 82 points. McLaren drivers lead the next group - Norris is at 69, Sainz at 65, and very close are Albon (64) and Gasly (63)
