Fernando Alonso on self-confidence at the beginning of his career and biggest regrets
by SEAD DEDOVIC
In an interview with the High-Performance Podcast, Fernando Alonso talked about various topics. A particularly interesting topic was the Spaniard's beginnings in F1, as well as his thoughts in those moments. Alonso obviously had confidence and self-belief from the first days of his career.
“It’s true that you arrived to F1… when I got to F1, Michael was dominating the sport but I never thought that I was slower than him in a way. Maybe it was just a kamikaze approach to F1 and the start of my career but I never doubted that having the same car I could challenge him one day That’s how all my career went so far”.
- he said, as quoted by crash.net Like every driver, you have certain moments in your career that don't quite go according to plan. Alonso was close to the championship several times, but at some moments he was simply not lucky enough to reach the trophy.
The Spaniard revealed what he regrets the most in his career; "Winning a championship with Ferrari, that will probably be the first thing I choose, if I can go back in time,” Alonso said. “2010, 2012, we were within a few laps of winning the championship.
That probably could have changed a little bit the outcome of many things, the history behind a few things”.
Fernando Alonso and his regrets
In addition, Alonso emphasized that he could have enjoyed more in certain moments.
Many things that happened in his career, Alonso can no longer remember. If he could turn back time, the Spaniard emphasized that he would enjoy it much more and spend his time in the opposite way. “What I regret, for sure, was not to enjoy more my time, my career,” he added.
“I know that I am at the end of it. There’s a new life in a few years time for me without driving and when I look back on my career I will see a lot of good things and good friendships and incredible experiences.
But it’s like I should have enjoyed [it] more. If I had the opportunity to live my exact life once more maybe I don’t change anything with my teams, with my choices or this Ferrari title. I would change to live a little bit more all those moments and try to have more memories from those moments.
I won the championship in Brazil 2005 and 2006, and I hardly remember anything from those afternoons and nights which is sad”.
