Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton were once big rivals, back in the days when both dominated the F1 scene. Although Lewis Hamilton remained at the top for many years, the last season, and especially this one now, does not look like someone who can compete for the title.

The Spanish driver, despite the rivalry and perhaps the 'sparks' on the tracks, still has respect for Hamilton and his career. "I have a lot of respect for him. I think at the end of the day, we met in our careers [on] a few occasions," -Fernando Alonso told RacingNews365.com. "This year we fight closer together and with similar cars, especially at this part of the year.

In Australia, we saw we were within two seconds the whole race and and it was just a close fight."

Fernando Alonso: Lewis Hamilton is lucky

Fernando Alonso has no doubt that Lewis is a great driver who possesses enormous qualities.

Nevertheless, the Spaniard emphasized that Hamilton was 'lucky' to be part of a team that can provide him with the best car. In such conditions, you have a better chance of winning the title. He also emphasized that Bottas would probably have been the champion if Hamilton had had problems then.

"I still think that he is one of the best drivers in the sport, and at the same time he had the luck to have a very dominant car for many years," he said. "So when you have a dominant car for many years, Michael [Schumacher] won seven [titles], Hamilton won seven, Max [Verstappen] will win three – let's say this year – and how many more we don't know.

I won two and in F1 you always need the best car to win the championship. If Hamilton had any problem during those years in Mercedes, [Valtteri] Bottas would be five-times World Champion."

Both are top drivers who have built their careers in the best way.
