In a captivating analysis, Antonio Perez Garabay, the father of Formula 1 driver Sergio Perez, has drawn an intriguing comparison between his son and Max Verstappen, the dynamic duo from Red Bull Racing who currently dominate the ongoing Formula 1 season.
A Comparison Resembling the McLaren Rivalry of Senna and Prost
As Checo and Verstappen wage a fierce battle for the championship this season, the Dutchman currently leads the driver's standings with a 14-point advantage over the Mexican driver.
However, the competition is far from settled. Antonio Perez believes that the intensifying rivalry between his son and Max echoes the legendary clash between former McLaren adversaries Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. Recalling the iconic era of Senna and Prost, Antonio Perez Garabay remarked to the Mexican newspaper Esto, "You have to remember when McLaren had Senna and Prost.
This is the same. Today we are living it again." Drawing a parallel between the two rivalries, he continued, "They are two tigers, gram for gram, in the same cage. They both think the same, have the same breakfast. You see they both try to take the fastest lap from one another.
In qualifying, they want pole position, they want to be fastest in free practice." Max Verstappen joined Red Bull Racing in 2016, while Sergio Perez became a part of the team in 2021, giving Verstappen a significant advantage in terms of experience with the team.
However, Antonio Perez remains optimistic about his son's ability to match Verstappen's pace. He explained, "So he has a lot of advantage, but Checo can now go at Max's pace. I think there are only a few thousandths between them in Max's favor, but on difficult tracks, I see them very evenly matched."
Antonio Perez Expresses Confidence in His Son's Championship Potential
Antonio Perez Garabay went on to reflect on the transformed demeanor of his son, stating, "Today I see a different Checo Perez – the way he talks, walks, and looks is different.
I notice it like a father when I talk to him and he says 'no, no, no boss, remember I am number 1,' and I tell him 'no, no, don't be confused,'" conveying a sense of pride and amusement. Expressing his belief in Sergio Perez's untapped potential, Antonio Perez added, "Earlier, finishing tenth was wonderful, but if Checo had had this opportunity from the beginning as other young drivers had, he would already be a world champion several times, I have no doubt.
I believe we will all see Checo Perez for the next ten years, and I certainly see him as a world champion." Anticipating an intense battle for the championship, Antonio Perez asserted, "We can afford the luxury of letting both drivers drive freely," emphasizing the confidence Red Bull Racing places in their talented drivers.
