Tour de France: Tadej Pogacar triumphs at the 2020 Grande Boucle

Sam Bennett won the twenty-first stage of the Tour de France 2020 arriving in Paris, on the Champs-Elysées. The Irishman was thus able to celebrate with a prestigious victory the conquest of the green jersey, already mathematically his after the intermediate sprint in which the great rival Peter Sagan did not participate.

The 21-year-old Slovenian Tadej Pogacar triumphs in the Grande Boucle 2020 thanks to the comeback of the time trial towards La Planche des Belles Filles, a feat that will remain in the annals of the French race. 122 km from Mantes la Jolie to the Champs-Elysées, stage with only one fourth category GPM in the initial part.

Long hug before the start between Tadej Pogacar and the great defeated Roglic, joined at the head of the group by the other Slovenians Mezgec, Mohoric and Polanc. After the usual group photo for the winner's team, the UAE Emirates, the stage begins.

Low pace in the initial part, the pace rises as soon as we arrive in the final circuit in Paris. The first attacks are not successful, then a quartet made up of Van Avermaet, Perichon, Schachmann and Swift manages to gain a margin of 20 "on their pursuers.

Not enough, the sprinter teams get to work and the fugitives are caught in four kilometers from the finish, in a masterpiece sprint by Sam Bennett beating Pedersen, Sagan, Kristoff and Viviani. Pogacar takes on the yellow jersey, white jersey and polka dot jersey, on the podium together with compatriot Roglic and Australian Porte.

Tadej Pogacar, the new star of cycling

From today, nothing will be the same again. “It's not true - retorts Tadej Pogacar -, I will always remain the same. With two sisters and an older brother who pushed me to ride a bike.

Oh my God, something has changed: I'm not used to all these reporters, then my phone is jammed. I would have liked to talk to mum and dad, I was able to hear only my girlfriend for 2 '(Urska Zigart, a cyclist too: she finished the pink Giro d'Italia yesterday, ed).

Here something has actually changed ”. And down laughter. The Little Prince has become King of the Tour. Last Monday, on the day of rest, I told him during a remote interview (damned Covid) of the nickname that the Gazzetta had given him: “I like it very much, because I know the book: it's a beautiful fairy tale."

Raised in Slovenia, he had two very clear priorities: studying and playing sports. Tadej practiced all sports as a child. This is because in Slovenia there is a training course: the government invests large resources in structures and teachers.

He follows up the children, awards scholarships. The results can be seen: with just over 2 million inhabitants (Lombardy has 5 times more) they made first and second in the Tour. Not only that, they have many other champions: skiing, basketball, volleyball, football.

They do not miss anything. In Italy the opposite happens: school and sport clash, abandoned gyms, youth games become a good memory. Only one thing is equal to Slovenia: the congratulatory phone call from the president. Indeed, not even that.

Pogacar again: “Did I hear from Borut Pahor (the Slovenian head of state, ed)? No, but he will be delighted. He is a sportsman, he follows cycling. There will be a way to talk ”. Here the politicians would have jumped through hoops to call the fresh winner of the Grande Boucle.

One past professional only in 2019 with the UAE-Emirates. In addition to the 3 stage wins at the Vuelta, which ended in 3rd place, behind Roglic and Valverde. In France, things were reversed: always 3 partial victories (in addition to the time trial, also the stage of the Pyrenees in Laruns and the one on the Grand Colombier), but the yellow jersey was torn from Primoz.

Already beaten at the time trial a few weeks ago, in the race valid for the Slovenian title. TOUR DE FRANCE 2020: FINAL RANKING 1. Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates) 87h 20 '05' '2. Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) +59 "3.
