The opening game of the ICC World Cup 2023 was a terrific clash between England and New Zealand. Unfortunately, England could not get off to a good start as New Zealand absolutely battered them. Eoin Morgan and many others felt that Ben Stokes' presence perhaps could have made a difference.
Stokes didn't play the opening game due to a hip injury; his inclusion in the playing XI for tomorrow's match against Bangladesh still remains to be clouded with doubt. Ben Stokes is a terrific all-rounder; however, he may miss out on a few more matches as he's not fully recovered yet.
Eoin Morgan on Ben Stokes exclusion
Recently Eoin Morgan shared his thoughts on Ben Stokes' absence and how much of a crucial role he would play for Team England in the World Cup this year. "Without doubt, you want to see Ben back as soon as possible," Morgan said, as quoted by cricbuzz.com.
"Again, bear in mind it is a six-and-a-half week tournament where you don't win it in the first couple of weeks. And it's not necessarily one player that wins it for you. The thing that we can't measure and continuously ask when it comes to Ben is how much he contributes in the change room and how much he makes other players better around him.
Morgan further said: That will be the contribution that I would say was probably missed a little bit in Ahmedabad, and (will be missed in) every other game between now and the time he can play. Even more so, I'd say,Because he just continues to deliver when the team needs him.
There's great belief and confidence around that when you play with a guy who has already crossed the finish line on numerous occasions and speaks in straight lines and not riddles. It's genuine. Having certainly been there and watched him do it, it's great to play with him".
