The well-experienced Tamim Iqbal will no longer serve as the captain for Team Bangladesh in ODI's, which means he won't be leading Bangladesh in the upcoming World Cup as he has stepped down with immediate effect. Iqbal last captained Bangladesh in the 1st ODI match against Afghanistan, which took place on the 5th of July.

Tamim Iqbal won't be participating in the upcoming Asia Cup due to a back injury but really looks forward to making his return for the series against New Zealand and the ICC world cup 2023.

Tamim Iqbal on stepping down

During a recent press conference, Tamim Iqbal revealed that he will no longer serve as the captain for Team Bangladesh in the ODI format and sheds some light on his next possible return.

"As you know I had an important meeting with Jalal bhai [Jalal Yunus] and Papon bhai [Nazmul Hassan]. We have discussed what will happen going forward. Today I step down as Bangladesh cricket team ODI captain," Iqbal said, as quoted by cricbuzz.com.

"I have taken injections but those treatments are almost hit and miss at this point. I have spoken of my problems with them. I have always thought about the team first". "Stepping down would be the best possible thing. I talked to the PM today and I gave her the message as well and she made me understand everything really nicely.

Main thing is, for the betterment of the team, I should step down as captain and try to give my best as a player whenever the opportunity comes. "If we had forced the issue, I could have played the Asia Cup but no one from the medical team or us sitting here wanted that.

Iqbal further said: I'm very hopeful of the New Zealand series," "I want to play the New Zealand series in the best possible shape" Iqbal said, as quoted by icc-cricket.com. "We could have rushed it for the Asia Cup but we are opting against it. I am very hopeful that I will be available for the World Cup."
