Sergey Kovalev arranged the first match after 2019

For some time now, there has been a match between Sergey Kovalev and Chinese Meng Fanlong, a match that would be a return for the great Russian boxer to return to the ring after November 2019 and a defeat by Canelo Alvarez in a match where he was practically declassified.

Today, the 38-year-old Kovalev (34-4-1, 29 KOs) has had no luck in the past, but he has also had various problems outside the ring, most of which include misconduct, but now is the time to get serious and try again do something about his career.

But it won’t be against Fanlong or organized by Thriller, as expected. Last week, there was news that the Chinese had given up on this match and signed a contract for the clash against Jean Pascal, which will take place on May 20.

Fortunately for Kovalev, he and Thriller quickly managed to agree on another match. In fact, this time he will move to the cruiser category, where he will be waiting for Tervel Pulev, the first weekend in May. 39-year-old Tervel Pulev (16-0, 13 KOs) is the older brother of the much more famous Kubrat Pulev and a bronze medalist in the heavyweight category from London in 2012.

Yet in professional boxing, despite an undefeated ratio, he did nothing worth mentioning. He fought mostly against unknown boxers at smaller events and this will definitely be the biggest match of his professional career.

And he was greeted at the end of his fourth decade of life.

Kovalev career

Kovalev was once one of the meanest boxers in the world. This is especially true of the period from November 2013, when he won the WBO light heavyweight title, which he then defended eight times, adding the IBF and WBA belt, and he won most matches by knockout.

He lost his belts in a match against Andrea Ward, held in November 2016, only to lose to Ward in the return leg. This is where his downfall actually began, although he once again managed to reach the title. Now they will try to reach the same in the new category.

Still, we don't know how seriously to take all this, especially when it comes to organizing Thriller, which so far has not proven to be a relevant and capable organizer, despite the considerable financial costs with which they entered the business within boxing.

Like we can’t even know how serious Kovalev is still a boxer. We will find out everything on September 7, which is the date for which the match against Pula has been agreed.
