A new opportunity for confirmation that he fully deserves a rematch against Teofimo Lopez is ahead of Vasily Lomachenko. The phenomenal Ukrainian boxer will enter the ring for the second time this year and for the second time since he lost two elite world titles in last year's match against Teofimo Lopez.
The date is December 11, when the Top Rank Boxing event is scheduled in Madison Square Garden, and the opponent is also someone who doesn't remember Teofimo Lopez for the good. This is 34-year-old Richard Commey (30-3, 27 KOs), a boxer from Ghana who took the IBF championship belt in February 2019.
He once defended him before Lopez took him away from him in December of that year by knocking him out in the second round of their match. At that moment Loma held two belts, which after an uncertain match held the following year also went to Teofimo.
Commey played his first match after that defeat in February this year, when he was better than Jackson Martinez. With this victory, Commey won the biggest match he can win at the moment, this one against the Ukrainian. As for Lomachenko (15-2, 11 KOs), he played his first match since losing to Lopez in June.
He was opposed by Masayoshi Nakatani, but the Japanese had no chance against another phenomenal "Loma", who only confirmed that he really deserves a rematch against Lopez.
Unfortunately, he made an unforgivable mistake, so he did not include a rematch clause in the contract for that match, and now he largely depends on the good will of Lopez and his team.
Still, the rematch seems much more realistic than it was a few months ago. The problem that Lomachenko has not yet reached the aforementioned rematch in the foreground arose because of Thriller, a promotional house that came through the auction to the right to organize Lopez's mandatory title defense against George Kambosos Jr.
That match has been postponed several times since June, and the latest information says that Triller withdrew and that it is actually questionable whether it will take place. Lopez has a duty to do the match against the prescribed challenger and after that, he can start arranging a possible rematch against Lomachenko, in fact, the match that boxing fans most want to see.
Meanwhile, Lomachenko and Commey will settle in a match whose winner will have the right to demand exactly what is mentioned above, a rematch against the current IBF, WBA and WBO champions. And there is no doubt that it will be another in a series of great matches that this category can offer.
