One of the best and most popular boxers in the world did not end 2020 as he had hoped. The defeat by Teofimo Lopez was hard for him, and this was followed by an injury that required surgery immediately after the match, which meant a break of several months for Lomachenko.
He is slowly returning to full training, so he starts working on the next match as well. As things currently go, he will, unfortunately, be a step back from what "Loma" did in previous years, but also an opportunity for a quick return among the candidates for the title attack.
What is important is that Lomachenko will remain in the lightweight category, in order to show how his defeat by Lopez came as a reason for poor access to the match, primarily from the tactical side. The popular Ukrainian should return to the ring at the beginning of the summer, and his opponent should apparently be Masayoshi Nakatani.
Nakatani is a 31-year-old Japanese boxer and is ranked 11th on the BoxRec lightweight rankings. So far in his professional career, he has recorded 19 wins and only one defeat. His first defeat was in July 2019 by Teofimo Lopez, so this will be a match that could bring the winner closer to the desired rematch against the new king of the category.
The Japanese last competed in December last year when he defeated a very good boxer, Felix Verde, with a break in the ninth round. The 32-year-old Lomachenko (14-2, 10 KOs) is still highly ranked in the mentioned rankings, ie he is the third boxer in the world in the category up to 61.3 kilograms.
In front of him, of course, is Lopez and Gervonta Davis. This category should bring a lot of excitement in the near future if some of the young stars are paired with each other. In addition to the already mentioned Lopez and Davis, this primarily refers to WBC belt holder Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia.
These four, together with Lomachenko, form the Top 5 of this category. He is slowly returning to full training, so he starts working on the next match as well. As things currently go, he will, unfortunately, be a step back from what "Loma" did in previous years, but also an opportunity for a quick return among the candidates for the title attack.
It will be interesting to see how Lomachenko copes after a defeat he did not expect. It is very important that he now finds the motivation and mental strength to show that he is still ready for great achievements. Lomachenko certainly aims to meet Lopez again where he would like to take revenge and show that the defeat was accidental
