There is a lot of talk these days about Cancelo Alvarez, he was always in the center of attention, especially in his best years, but lately he has been receiving more and more criticism. Once considered the best fighter in the world, the Mexican, according to his colleagues and journalists, fell into a rut and has no fights with the best fighters.

Maybe he simply got fed up with boxing and training or it came with age. Leonard Ellerbe believes that Alvarez has not had a strong opponent for a long time and that may be why there are such stories about him. Ellerbe then added that he doesn't think that Cancelo Alvarez is on a downward career path, but that he simply hasn't had a chance to prove himself for a long time.

Then he spoke about the Mexican's former opponent Dmitry Bivol, whom he said was not a fighter and that Alvarez chooses such fighters. However, after that he received condemnations from many boxing experts who do not agree with what Ellerbe is saying.

“The level of opponents that he’s faced haven't been the elite fighters,” said Ellerbe to FightHype.com as he described Alvarez’s recent string of opponents.

“Bivol is a solid guy. No disrespect, he’s not an elite fighter. He's a solid fighter, he’s good”. “Canelo is coming to that fight with a chip on his shoulder. He’s coming off an injury and that explains why his last couple of performances haven't been what the public would expect.

I think with this fight right here, he’s gonna lay it on the line. I think we're gonna see the best version of where he’s at right now”. as quoted by Boxing Scene. Maybe Leonard Ellerbe is right, but that will not diminish the merits of Alvarez from his best years when everyone came with a dose of fear to the ring with him.

Alvarez is 33 years old, so we will certainly be watching his fights for a few more years, and time will tell who is right and who is wrong.
